Autism Help Guides for Caregivers of the Autistic
Caring for an individual with autism or Autism Spectrum Disorders presents many challenges. In addition to communication issues, individuals with autism may have sensitivities to sound, light or touch that others do not have. They may be distracted more easily, or focus intently on one thing for long periods of time. They may have difficulty expressing discomfort or making needs known. This leads to frustration, emotional outbursts and other behavioral issues. These problems place an enormous strain on the primary caregiver, who must learn how the individual expresses his needs, recognize the warning signs of problem behavior and learn how to appropriately prevent outbursts. Suffice to say, those involved in the care of an individual with autism require a deep understanding of the diagnosis, patience, understanding and a lot of help.
Caring for an individual with autism should never be a solo effort. Therapists will help treat speech/language issues, behavior problems and learning disabilities. Psychiatrists and other medical professionals will help prescribe important medications and other treatments. However, not every member of your care team needs to be a trained specialist.
