Aspergers Treatment and Help Guides for Caregivers
Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) affects an individual’s ability to socialize and effectively communicate with others. Children with AS typically exhibit inappropriate or minimal social interactions, and an all-absorbing interest in specific topics. AS is estimated to affect over 400,000 families and can not only be difficult to diagnose, but also to treat.
There currently is no cure for AS, yet if your child exhibits any of the symptoms of AS, early intervention, with educational, behavioral and social training, performed while a child’s brain is still developing, is highly recommended. Treatment for AS should be designed specifically for your child, since symptoms vary between individuals. Any treatment option should work to improve your child’s abilities to interact with other people and thus to function effectively in society and be self-sufficient. Options may include:
- Social skills training
- Language therapy
- Parent education and training
- Behavioral modifications
- Educational interventions
For all treatment options, it is important to involve all of your child’s caregivers in treatment. The health professionals who are caring for your child should know what the others are doing. Doctors, family members, therapists, friends, teachers and anyone else who cares for your child should be involved. You will want to stay informed about what is happening with your child at school or during other activities, which includes frequent, clear and precise communication that goes back and forth between you and your child’s teachers. You will often find yourself acting as the “case manager” in this scenario.
